Visa requirement

South Africans need to apply for a visa before travel to Algeria.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

    Tourist and business visas from the embassy. A transit visa is also needed if passing through Algeria.

  • Passport validity

    At least 6 months.

  • How to apply

    Apply in person (or through a representative or visa agency) at the embassy with: 2 application forms, a hotel booking or certified invitation from an Algerian host, a return ticket, an employer letter, bank statements, passport plus copy, ID copy and 2 photos. GSA says no fee for South African citizens. Processing 10–15 working days; no urgent service.

  • Where South Africans apply

    Embassy of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, 950 Arcadia St, Hatfield, Pretoria.

  • Return or onward ticket

    Confirmed return ticket required for the visa application.

  • Proof of funds

    Bank statement or proof of income required for the visa application.

  • Accommodation or invitation

    Hotel reservation or certified invitation (certificat d'hébergement) required.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

    ALGERIA: yellow fever certificate if arriving from a risk country. RETURN TO SOUTH AFRICA: Algeria is not on South Africa's yellow fever risk-country list, so no certificate is needed on return unless you transited a risk country (or a risk-country airport for more than 12 hours) on the way.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

    Overstaying can lead to detention and prosecution, with up to 3 months' imprisonment.
