Trip checklist: Argentina
For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.
Visa requirement
South Africans don't need a visa for Argentina.
Permitted stay
You can stay up to 90 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.
Before you go
- Purpose of visit
Tourism. The GSA also lists business visits up to 90 days as visa-free for South Africans. That is not confirmed on an official page. Work or study needs a visa from an Argentine consulate.
- Passport validity
Migraciones asks only for a valid passport. FCDO: valid for the whole stay. A news source citing Decreto 366/2025 mentions at least 3 months' validity, but this is not confirmed officially.
- How to apply
No visa needed. Present your passport at immigration. Under Decreto 366/2025 you may also be asked for a sworn statement (declaración jurada) on the purpose of your trip and on having health insurance.
- Where South Africans apply
Not needed for tourism. For other visas, the Embassy of Argentina in Pretoria (esafr.cancilleria.gob.ar; the site blocked automated access).
- Travel insurance
Decreto 366/2025 (in force since 29 May 2025) requires foreigners entering Argentina to declare that they have health insurance. The decree sets no minimum cover. Press reports a US$20,000 figure; this is not in the decree text. Without insurance, non-residents pay for non-emergency care at public hospitals. Border enforcement looks inconsistent. Carry a policy anyway.
- Return or onward ticket
Not specified on the official pages checked. Press reports cite return tickets as a requirement under the 2025 reforms.
- Proof of funds
Not published officially. Press reports cite about US$50 a day.
- Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa
Argentina: no yellow fever certificate required on entry (WHO). WHO recommends vaccination for Misiones and Corrientes provinces (for example Iguazú). South Africa's own rule on return: South Africa requires a valid yellow fever certificate from all travellers over 1 year of age, South African citizens included, arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country or after more than 12 hours' airport transit in one; Argentina is on South Africa's risk list. Without it you can be refused entry or quarantined for up to 6 days. The certificate is valid for life and only counts 10 days after vaccination.
- Arrival forms
No arrival card. FCDO notes passports are no longer stamped on entry. Possible sworn statement under Decreto 366/2025 (see insurance).
- Extending your stay and overstaying
Tourist stay can be extended by Migraciones for one more period of up to 3 months. Overstay fines: not published on the pages checked.
- Travelling with children
FCDO: travel permission (Autorización de viaje) rules apply to children resident in Argentina, or staying 1 year or more. Short-stay foreign tourists are not covered. South Africa's own rules on minors travelling still apply on departure and return.
- Confirm with the embassy
Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
