Trip checklist: Bahamas

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans don't need a visa for the Bahamas.

Permitted stay

Up to 3 months for South Africans per GSA and the reference dataset. The immigration officer sets the period; the absolute visitor maximum is 8 months.

Before you go

  • Passport validity

At least 6 months from entry (GSA).

  • How to apply

    No application needed.

  • Where South Africans apply

    Not needed. South African Consulate in Nassau: nassau@saconsulate.org, +1 242 327 1400.

  • Return or onward ticket

All visitors must have a return or onward ticket.

  • Proof of funds

Evidence of sufficient funds to be self-supporting may be required.

  • Accommodation or invitation

Hotel confirmation or accommodation address (GSA).

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

Destination rule: a yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever transmission risk; South Africa is not a risk country. Return to South Africa: this country is not a yellow fever risk country, so no certificate is needed on return, unless you transited through a risk country (for example via Panama or South America) on the way.

  • Transit

Most routings go via the United States: you need a US visa (South Africans are not ESTA-eligible).

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
