Trip checklist: Ecuador

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans don't need a visa for Ecuador.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 90 days per year.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

    Tourism.

  • Passport validity

FCDO: at least 6 months from arrival.

  • How to apply

No visa needed. Present your passport at immigration.

  • Travel insurance

Mandatory health insurance for Galápagos visitors (FCDO). Ecuadorian law also asks tourists to hold health insurance for their stay, but mainland enforcement is not documented on sources reached. Carry a policy.

  • Return or onward ticket

Galápagos: return flight to the mainland required. Mainland: not published.

  • Accommodation or invitation

Galápagos: hotel booking or tour confirmation required.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

Ecuador REQUIRES a yellow fever certificate from travellers over 1 year arriving from risk countries (WHO). WHO recommends vaccination for areas east of the Andes below 2,300 m (Amazon). South Africa's own rule on return: South Africa requires a valid yellow fever certificate from all travellers over 1 year of age, South African citizens included, arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country or after more than 12 hours' airport transit in one; Ecuador is on South Africa's risk list. Without it you can be refused entry or quarantined for up to 6 days. The certificate is valid for life and only counts 10 days after vaccination.

  • Arrival forms

Galápagos: Transit Control Card (TCT) bought before the flight (pre-register online, pay at the airport), plus the national park entrance fee on arrival. Cash over US$10,000 must be registered online at least 3 days before travel. Land borders: FCDO says an apostilled criminal record certificate (previous 5 years' residence country) is required, with limited exemptions.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

An extra 90 days can be requested online through the migration system. Overstays are fined and can bar re-entry. Details are not published on the sources reached.

  • Transit

Since June 2025, transit visas apply only to nationals already needing entry visas, which does not include South Africa.

  • Travelling with children

FCDO: tourist minors need no special authorisation to enter; notarised consent rules apply to residents or stays over 90 days.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
