Trip checklist: El Salvador

Visa requirement

We're still confirming this with official sources. What we've found so far: No visa needed. Check with the embassy before you rely on it.

Permitted stay

Up to 90 days if visa-free. CA-4 rule: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua share one visitor period. The 90 days start when you first enter any of the four and do not restart when you cross between them. Leave the CA-4 area (for example to Belize, Mexico or Costa Rica) to start a new period.

  • Passport validity

    At least 6 months.

  • How to apply

    If visa-free: no application, buy a Tourist Card on arrival (GSA reports US$12). If South Africa is not exempt: Special Entry Permit online at elsalvadorpei.migracion.gob.sv, or a consular visa. The official visa checker is at rree.gob.sv/visas (interactive; result for South Africa not readable by our tools).

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

    Destination rule: a yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever transmission risk; South Africa is not a risk country. Return to South Africa: this country is not a yellow fever risk country, so no certificate is needed on return, unless you transited through a risk country (for example via Panama or South America) on the way.

  • Arrival forms

    Airport Improvement Tariff: since 28 October 2023, South African citizens (with citizens of most African countries and India) must pay US$1,130 (US$1,000 plus 13% VAT) before boarding when passing through San Salvador international airport. Payment does not guarantee entry or transit.

  • Transit

    The US$1,130 airport tariff applies to South Africans in transit through San Salvador airport.

  • Confirm with the embassy
