Hong Kong: do South Africans need a visa?

South Africans don't need a visa for Hong Kong. You can stay up to 30 days per visit.

Visa-free for visits. South African nationals are listed by the Hong Kong Immigration Department with a 30-day visa-free period. Entry is never automatic: the officer must be satisfied you are a genuine visitor.1

Before you travel

Purpose of visit

Visit and tourism, and transit. Visitors may not take up employment (paid or unpaid), establish or join in any business, or enter school as a student, and may not normally change status after arrival.1

Passport validity

Hong Kong Immigration asks for a valid travel document with adequate returnability to your home country but does not publish a fixed number of months for visa-free visitors. The UK and US governments both state at least 1 month beyond your intended stay. Carry a passport valid for at least 6 months to avoid airline check-in problems.456

How to apply

No application needed for stays of up to 30 days: present your passport on arrival. For a longer stay, apply for a visit visa before travel through the Immigration Department's online e-Visa system (www.immd.gov.hk) or through a Chinese diplomatic or consular mission. Processing normally takes about 4 weeks after all documents are received. The fee is not stated on the pages checked.147

Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

No vaccinations are required to enter Hong Kong according to the US State Department; the Hong Kong Department of Health travel health pages do not list a yellow fever entry requirement for Hong Kong. Note that the UK FCDO says a yellow fever certificate is needed if arriving from a transmission-risk country, so carry one if you are coming from such a country. Return to South Africa: Hong Kong is not a yellow fever risk country, so no certificate is needed for the return, unless you transited through a risk country (more than 12 hours in the airport of a risk country).856

Arrival forms

None. The Immigration Department cancelled arrival and departure cards for visitors with effect from 16 October 2024. A landing slip showing your conditions and limit of stay is issued on arrival. Frequent visitors aged 18 or over with an electronic passport who have arrived via Hong Kong International Airport at least twice in the past 24 months can enrol for e-Channel (relaxed from 27 February 2026).239

Extending your stay and overstaying

Visitors may apply to extend their stay when the remaining limit of stay is within 14 days; online applications usually take about one working day. Extensions are discretionary. Overstaying is an offence under Hong Kong law; specific penalties were not found on the pages checked.4

Transit

Passengers in direct transit by air who do not leave the airport transit area do not need to pass immigration. Transit passengers who enter Hong Kong are treated as visitors (30 days visa-free for South Africans) and need an onward ticket unless travelling to the Chinese Mainland or Macao.14

Travelling with children

Not published for visa-free visitors. Children need their own passport. For visa applications, the form for applicants under 16 must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
