Trip checklist: Kiribati

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans don't need a visa for Kiribati.

Permitted stay

Up to 90 days in any 12-month period. Visa-exempt visitors are usually admitted for about 1 month at first, and this can be extended at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration in Bairiki, up to the 90-day limit.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

Tourism. Work, study, investment, religious work and transit have separate visas with forms on the Ministry site.

  • Passport validity

At least 6 months. The GSA says 6 months after departure; the UK FCDO says 6 months beyond arrival with 2 blank pages. Use 6 months beyond departure to be safe.

  • How to apply

Nothing in advance if visa-exempt. Visitor visa forms for non-exempt travellers are on mfa.gov.ki/immigration. Enquiries: visaofficer@mfa.gov.ki or Immigration, Bairiki, Tarawa (phone 75021342 or 75021368).

  • Where South Africans apply

Not applicable if visa-exempt. No Kiribati mission in South Africa was found.

  • Return or onward ticket

    Return or onward ticket required.

  • Proof of funds

Enough funds for your stay. No amount published.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

The US State Department lists no required vaccinations. South Africa's rule: you need a yellow fever certificate to enter South Africa only if you arrive from or transited a yellow-fever-risk country. Kiribati is not a risk country, so a direct return needs none, but a routing through a risk country in Africa or South America would trigger it.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

Extensions are granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration in Bairiki, provided your passport stays valid, up to 90 days in 12 months in total. Overstay penalties not published.

  • Transit

Kiribati issues a transit visa (form on the Ministry site). Hub rules: via Australia, South Africans may use Transit Without Visa (air arrival, onward flight to a third country within 8 hours, stay airside); otherwise an Australian Transit (771) or Visitor visa is needed. Via Auckland, South Africans need a New Zealand Transit Visa (from NZD 235, up to 24 hours airside) unless they already hold a NZ visa.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
