Trip checklist: Lesotho

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans don't need a visa for Lesotho.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 90 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

Tourism and visits. Work needs a permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

  • Passport validity

FCDO: at least 90 days after arrival, with at least 4 blank pages (stamps from both the Lesotho and South African posts on every crossing). Not published by Lesotho itself in sources checked.

  • How to apply

No application needed; entry stamp at the border post or Moshoeshoe I airport. Lesotho's e-visa service (homeaffairs.gov.ls) is marked as suspended on the Ministry site, which does not matter to exempt South Africans.

  • Where South Africans apply

Not applicable for visits. Permits and extensions: Ministry of Home Affairs, Maseru (Visa Application Centre, Manthabiseng Convention Centre). Lesotho High Commission in Pretoria for consular queries.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

No certificate requirements under International Health Regulations (TravelHealthPro). Lesotho is not on South Africa's yellow fever risk list, so nothing needed on return.

  • Arrival forms

Not published in sources checked. Declare cash or travellers' cheques worth LSL 25,000 or more.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

Extend by completing a 90-day temporary permit extension form at the Visa Application Centre, Manthabiseng Convention Centre, Maseru. Overstayers may be detained and are charged weekly fines (FCDO).

  • Transit

Lesotho is enclaved by South Africa; transit is by road through SA, so South African rules govern. No Lesotho transit visa needed for SA citizens.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
