Malawi: do South Africans need a visa?

South Africans don't need a visa for Malawi. You can stay up to 30 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.

Visa-free. South Africa is listed as 'VISA Free' in the Malawi Department of Tourism's 2026 country table, and in the 'no visa required' category on the Malawi High Commission in London's visa page. Under the reciprocity-based visa regime in force since 3 January 2026, SADC nationals stay exempt unless their country requires visas from Malawians. South Africa does not (Malawians get 30 days visa-free in SA), so South Africans stay exempt.1243

Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

Malawi requires a yellow fever certificate only if you arrive from a yellow fever transmission-risk country (FCDO, US State Department). Not needed when flying direct from South Africa. Malawi is not on South Africa's yellow fever risk list, so no certificate is needed to return to SA, unless you transited a risk country (for example via Nairobi or Addis Ababa: more than 12 hours airside or leaving the airport). Malaria prophylaxis is recommended.7910

Arrival forms

Declare all foreign currency on arrival (US State Department). Exporting more than US$5,000 per trip needs bank approval; undeclared amounts may be confiscated. Declare anything prohibited or dutiable (FCDO).79

Extending your stay and overstaying

The visitor's permit (up to 30 days) can be extended to a maximum of 90 days at the Department of Immigration. Overstaying can lead to arrest, a fine and deportation (US State Department).59

What changed

24 February 2026Visa on arrival reinstated at designated ports for 'Category Two' nationals (eVisa portal notice). Does not affect visa-exempt South Africans.
3 January 2026Malawi replaced its 2024 visa waiver with a reciprocity-based regime (Malawi Gazette supplement, 2 January 2026). UK, US, EU and Canadian nationals now need visas. SADC and COMESA nationals remain exempt unless their country requires visas from Malawians, so South Africans are unaffected.
