Visa requirement

South Africans need to apply for a visa before travel to Mexico.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 180 days per visit.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

    Tourism, business visits, transit, without remunerated activity. Paid activities need a separate visa (USD 304 / R5,461).

  • Passport validity

    Valid for the whole stay; the qualifying US/UK/Schengen/Canada/Japan visa must also be valid on entry and be a multiple-entry visa in the passport. Only visas/residence cards issued as physical documents are reliably accepted.

  • How to apply

    If not covered by the exemption: apply in person, by appointment requested by email, at the Consular Section of the Embassy of Mexico in Pretoria. Requirements include passport, photo, proof of legal residence in SA (for non-citizens) and economic solvency (12 months' stamped bank statements, payslips, employment letter) or an invitation letter. Visitor visa fee USD 53 (R952). The SAE electronic authorisation is NOT available to South Africans; in 2026 it covers only Brazil, Ukraine, Turkey and Russia.

  • Return or onward ticket

    Be ready to show a return or onward ticket at the border.

  • Proof of funds

    May be asked at border. Visa applicants must prove solvency; Mexican consulates set thresholds in local currency (e.g. Ottawa: monthly income about CAD 2,090 or average balance about CAD 6,461 over 3 months). The Pretoria embassy page asks for 12 months' bank statements but publishes no rand threshold.

  • Accommodation or invitation

    Proof of accommodation may be requested at the border; an invitation letter supports a visa application.

  • Arrival forms

    Air arrivals are recorded digitally (proof of entry downloadable from the INM portal within 60 days). Land arrivals complete an online FMM. Quintana Roo (Cancun, Tulum) charges the VISITAX state entry tax, payable online or at Cancun airport and checked on departure.

  • Travelling with children

    Carry proof of relationship and travel purpose; Mexican or dual-national children leaving Mexico without both parents need the SAM permission form. SA exit rules for minors also apply.

  • Confirm with the embassy
