Trip checklist: Micronesia

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans don't need a visa for Micronesia.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 30 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

Tourism. Stays over 30 days or for other purposes need an entry permit from the Division of Immigration and Labor, Palikir, Pohnpei.

  • Passport validity

At least 120 days beyond the date of entry into the FSM.

  • How to apply

Nothing in advance for 30 days or less. Complete the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) form on arrival. For longer stays apply for an entry permit: Chief, Division of Immigration and Labor, Department of Justice, Pohnpei, phone +691 320 5844, imhq@mail.fm or passport@gov.fm.

  • Where South Africans apply

Not applicable for 30 days or less. Longer stays: FSM Division of Immigration and Labor in Pohnpei. No FSM mission in South Africa was found.

  • Return or onward ticket

Required: every visitor must show a return or onward ticket to a destination outside the FSM.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

FSM requires vaccination certificates only from travellers coming from an infected area. South Africa's rule: you need a yellow fever certificate to enter South Africa only if you arrive from or transited a yellow-fever-risk country. Micronesia is not a risk country, so a direct return needs none, but a routing through a risk country in Africa or South America would trigger it.

  • Arrival forms

Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) form on arrival. USD 20 departure fee at all four state airports (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae).

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

An entry permit may extend your stay by up to 60 days. Overstay penalties not published.

  • Transit

FSM transit rules not found. Many routes go via Guam or Honolulu, where US entry rules apply; check US transit rules separately. Hub rules: via Australia, South Africans may use Transit Without Visa (air arrival, onward flight to a third country within 8 hours, stay airside); otherwise an Australian Transit (771) or Visitor visa is needed. Via Auckland, South Africans need a New Zealand Transit Visa (from NZD 235, up to 24 hours airside) unless they already hold a NZ visa.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
