Trip checklist: Nauru
For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.
Visa requirement
South Africans need to apply for a visa before travel to Nauru.
Permitted stay
Not published. Wikipedia mentions 90 days for exempt and on-arrival nationalities; no figure found for visas issued in advance.
Before you go
- Purpose of visit
Tourist and business visitors both need a visa. Business visitors need a local sponsor.
- Passport validity
At least 3 months beyond your arrival date.
- How to apply
Apply in advance by emailing Nauru Immigration (Department of Justice and Border Control) with your details, according to Wikipedia. Fee and processing time not published. Nauru missions abroad (for example the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York) can also help.
- Where South Africans apply
No Nauru mission in South Africa. Apply directly to Nauru Immigration by email, or through a Nauru mission abroad. Which mission covers South Africa is not published.
- Return or onward ticket
Onward or return ticket required.
- Accommodation or invitation
Proof of hotel bookings, or sponsorship from a resident of Nauru.
- Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa
The US State Department says Nauru does not require yellow fever vaccination. South Africa's rule: you need a yellow fever certificate to enter South Africa only if you arrive from or transited a yellow-fever-risk country. Nauru is not a risk country, so a direct return needs none, but a routing through a risk country in Africa or South America would trigger it.
- Transit
Nauru: no visa reportedly needed if your connecting flight leaves within 3 hours (Wikipedia). Flights run via Brisbane, Nadi or Tarawa. Hub rules: via Australia, South Africans may use Transit Without Visa (air arrival, onward flight to a third country within 8 hours, stay airside); otherwise an Australian Transit (771) or Visitor visa is needed. Via Auckland, South Africans need a New Zealand Transit Visa (from NZD 235, up to 24 hours airside) unless they already hold a NZ visa.
- Confirm with the embassy
Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
