Nicaragua: do South Africans need a visa?
Not yet confirmed: No visa needed
Visa-free per GSA (Oct 2025) and the reference dataset, but NOT confirmed after Nicaragua's February 2026 overhaul of visa categories. Wikipedia's Visa policy of Nicaragua does not show South Africa among visa-exempt countries; the official disposition could not be opened.261
Travel advice
Travel with caution
The US advises travellers to reconsider travel to Nicaragua because of arbitrary entry and exit bans, detentions and expulsions.
We show UK and US government advice because they publish detailed, regularly updated assessments. Checked 5 October 2026.

Before you travel
Length of stay
Up to 90 days if visa-free, extendable once by up to 30 days for a fee. CA-4 rule: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua share one visitor period. The 90 days start when you first enter any of the four and do not restart when you cross between them. Leave the CA-4 area (for example to Belize, Mexico or Costa Rica) to start a new period.31

Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa
Destination rule: a yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever transmission risk; South Africa is not a risk country. Return to South Africa: this country is not a yellow fever risk country, so no certificate is needed on return, unless you transited through a risk country (for example via Panama or South America) on the way.3
