Trip checklist: North Macedonia

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans need to apply for a visa before travel to North Macedonia.

Permitted stay

15 days under the visa-holder exemption (the other visa must be valid at least 5 days beyond the stay; total no more than 90 days in 180). Stay on a Macedonian visa depends on the visa issued.

Before you go

  • Passport validity

GSA: at least 3 months beyond the intended stay. UK FCDO (for British visitors): at least 90 days after arrival.

  • How to apply

Apply at a North Macedonian embassy before travel. GSA lists: application form, passport valid 3 months beyond stay, travel insurance, notarised invitation letter from a host in North Macedonia, proof of funds (bank statements or card), one colour photo 3.5 x 4.5 cm on white, proof of fee payment. Fee and processing time not published in sources checked.

  • Where South Africans apply

No North Macedonian embassy in South Africa. GSA says representation for South Africa is accredited from Athens, Greece. Confirm with the mission before applying.

  • Travel insurance

Travel insurance is listed as a visa application document (GSA). Minimum cover not published.

  • Proof of funds

Proof of sufficient funds for the stay is a visa application document (GSA). Amount not published.

  • Accommodation or invitation

Visa applicants need a notarised invitation letter (GSA). All visitors must register with local police within 48 hours of arrival; hotels do this at check-in (UK FCDO).

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

North Macedonia publishes no yellow fever rule for South Africans in the sources checked. It is not a yellow fever risk country, so no certificate is needed to return to South Africa from North Macedonia, unless you transited a risk country.

  • Arrival forms

Declare cash of EUR 10,000 or more on entry (UK FCDO).

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
