Trip checklist: Panama

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans don't need a visa for Panama.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 90 days per visit.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

    Tourism. Work needs a permit.

  • Passport validity

At least 3 months validity on entry (Embassy of Panama). GSA advises 6 months and 3 blank pages; airlines may apply 6 months.

  • How to apply

    No application needed.

  • Where South Africans apply

Not needed for tourism. For other visas: Embassy of Panama in Pretoria (tel 012 346 0703, visas@embassypanama.com, visa section Mon to Fri 10:00 to 14:00). Consular appointments for stamped visas are booked through tramites.migracion.gob.pa.

  • Return or onward ticket

Return or onward ticket required, particularly if arriving by land from Costa Rica.

  • Proof of funds

At least US$500 (Embassy of Panama, GSA). UK FCDO says US$1,000 or a credit card; carry the higher amount or a credit card to be safe.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

Destination rule: a yellow fever certificate is needed if you arrive from a country with yellow fever transmission risk; South Africa is not a risk country. Return to South Africa: this country has yellow fever risk areas on the WHO list, so South Africa requires travellers arriving from it, South Africans included, to show a valid yellow fever certificate. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel. The WHO risk listing was not re-fetched this session; confirm against the current NICD/WHO list.

  • Transit

No transit visa needed for visa-exempt nationals. If you route through the United States you need a US visa (South Africans are not eligible for ESTA).

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
