Qatar: do South Africans need a visa?

South Africans don't need a visa for Qatar. You can stay up to 30 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.

Visa-free. Visit Qatar's official visa checker returns 'Enter visa-free or get easy access with Hayya' for South Africa. Qatar now uses the term 'visa-free entry' for what used to be called visa on arrival. No advance application and no fee for the visa-free route.1

Before you travel

Purpose of visit

Tourism, family visits and short business visits under the visa-free waiver. Work, study or residence need a sponsored visa through the Hayya or Ministry of Interior system.12

Confirmed by other governments' official advice

Passport validity

Visit Qatar says at least 3 months from the date of arrival. The 2017 waiver announcement and the US State Department say 6 months. Travel with at least 6 months left to avoid airline boarding problems.162

How to apply

Nothing to apply for. The waiver is granted at the immigration counter on arrival at Hamad International Airport, free of charge. If you prefer, you can apply in advance for a Hayya A1 entry visa on the official portal hayya.qa (fee QAR 100 per Visit Qatar). Extensions are done through the Ministry of Interior (portal.moi.gov.qa or the Metrash app) before the 30 days run out.145

Where South Africans apply

No application needed for the visa-free route. For other visa types South Africans use the Hayya portal (hayya.qa) online. The Embassy of the State of Qatar is in Pretoria, but its visa page could not be reached.14

Travel insurance

Not required for stays of 30 days or less. Visit Qatar recommends all visitors hold valid health insurance. If you stay longer than 30 days (for example after an extension) you must buy health insurance from a Ministry of Public Health registered provider.13

Accommodation or invitation

Visit Qatar states the visitor 'must hold a confirmed hotel booking on arrival' for the visa-free group. Any confirmed hotel booking appears to be accepted; the Discover Qatar booking requirement applies to other nationalities (such as India and Pakistan), not South Africa. Staying with friends or family may be questioned, so carry their address and contact details.1

Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

No vaccinations required for travellers arriving from South Africa. Qatar asks for a yellow fever certificate only from travellers arriving from yellow fever risk countries. Returning to South Africa: Qatar is not on South Africa's yellow fever risk list, so no certificate is needed on return unless you transited a risk country.36

Arrival forms

No arrival card or online pre-registration is required for visa-free visitors. Customs: declare cash, precious metals or gemstones worth more than QAR 50,000. E-cigarettes and vapes are banned and may be confiscated.3

Extending your stay and overstaying

The 30-day waiver can be extended once for 30 more days through the Ministry of Interior (Metrash app or portal.moi.gov.qa) before it expires. Health insurance from a registered provider is then required. Overstay fines are charged daily; amount not confirmed on an official page.532

Transit

Airside transit at Hamad International Airport needs no visa. If you leave the airport, the visa-free waiver applies. Secondary sources say the waiver is not meant for stays of less than one night and a transit visa is used instead; not confirmed on an official page.8
