For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans need to apply for a visa before travel to Sudan.

Permitted stay

Not published.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

Separate travel permits are needed for areas outside the capital, and separate permits for Darfur.

  • Passport validity

At least 6 months after the date you arrive, with 2 blank pages.

  • How to apply

Apply at a Sudanese embassy before travel, usually the one in the country you are travelling from. Fees, processing time and documents were not confirmed.

  • Where South Africans apply

Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Pretoria (listed as a mission in South Africa). Its current visa service, fees and documents could not be checked.

  • Proof of funds

Not published. Sudan is cash-only for foreigners; foreign bank cards do not work. US State Dept reports a USD 3,000 cash limit when leaving.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

Sudan requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter. Sudan is also on South Africa's yellow fever risk list, so you need a valid yellow fever certificate to re-enter South Africa after visiting, or after an airport transit of more than 12 hours there. The vaccine takes effect 10 days after the jab and the certificate is valid for life.

  • Arrival forms

You must register with the Aliens Department at the Ministry of Interior within 3 days of arrival (UK FCDO); Wikipedia says police registration within 24 hours. Fines apply for late registration and a fee is charged.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

Visitors on a single-entry visa may need an exit visa to leave; enforcement varies. A fee applies. Contact Port Sudan Airport immigration.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
