Trip checklist: Gambia
For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.
Visa requirement
South Africans don't need a visa for the Gambia.
Permitted stay
You can stay up to 90 days per visit.
Before you go
- Purpose of visit
Tourism and business visits. Not for employment: a short visit requires that you are a genuine tourist or businessperson and not seeking work.
- Passport validity
Valid for the whole stay (UK and US advice). The Gambia's own minimum is not published. Carry at least 6 months' validity to avoid airline problems.
- How to apply
No application. Arrive at a recognised port of entry with a valid passport. The final decision on entry rests with the immigration officer at the port of arrival.
- Where South Africans apply
Nothing to apply for. For anything else, contact the Gambia Immigration Department (gid.gov.gm). A Gambian mission covering South Africa was not confirmed in this pass.
- Return or onward ticket
The Gambia's short-visit rules ask for a return ticket or equivalent funds. Carry a return or onward ticket.
- Proof of funds
Visa-exempt visitors must show visible means of sustenance. No amount is published.
- Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa
THE GAMBIA: A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a yellow fever transmission risk country (UK and US advice). Arriving direct from South Africa this does not apply, but it does if you route via a risk country. SOUTH AFRICA: The Gambia is on South Africa's yellow fever risk list. Everyone over 1 year old, South Africans included, returning to South Africa from The Gambia, or after an airport transit of more than 12 hours there, must show a valid yellow fever certificate on arrival in South Africa. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel; the certificate is valid for life.
- Extending your stay and overstaying
Not published by The Gambia. US advice says overstays are fined USD 15 per month, paid in cash on departure.
- Transit
Not published for visa-exempt nationals. The Gambia's transit visa is for nationals who need a visa and requires onward tickets and assured entry to the next country.
- Travelling with children
US advice says children need birth certificates and a notarised consent letter if one parent is not travelling. Also follow South Africa's own rules for minors leaving the country.
- Confirm with the embassy
Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
