Trip checklist: Indonesia

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans can get a visa on arrival in Indonesia.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 30 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

Tourism, family visits, business meetings, government duties, transit. No employment.

  • Passport validity

At least 6 months' validity from arrival and at least 2 blank pages (applies to all foreign nationals).

  • How to apply

Either e-VOA online before travel at the official portal https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id (Directorate General of Immigration; up to 5 applicants per submission; pay by Visa/Mastercard/JCB; visa sent by email), or buy VoA on arrival at main international airports and seaports. Fee IDR 500,000. Other visa types (e.g. 60-day multiple-entry tourist visa) are applied for on the same portal.

  • Where South Africans apply

No embassy application needed for VoA/e-VOA. For other visas, apply online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Pretoria handles consular matters (its website kemlu.go.id/pretoria showed no usable content when checked).

  • Return or onward ticket

Required: proof of return or onward travel.

  • Accommodation or invitation

Not required for VoA; address in Indonesia is entered on the arrival card.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

Yellow fever certificate required only if arriving from a yellow-fever transmission-risk country. Indonesia is not a risk country, so South Africa's certificate rule does not apply on return (but check if routing via a risk country).

  • Arrival forms

All Indonesia Arrival Card, mandatory since 1 October 2025. One form combining immigration, customs (replaces e-CD) and health/quarantine (replaces SATUSEHAT) declarations. Submit free of charge at https://allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the official 'All Indonesia' app within 3 days (72 hours) before arrival, or on arrival. Bali levy: every foreign tourist entering Bali pays IDR 150,000 once per trip, online at https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id (or Love Bali app) before arrival, or at airport/port counters. A QR voucher is emailed. Exempt: diplomatic/official visa holders, crew, KITAS/KITAP holders, family-unification visa holders; student and golden visa holders must apply for exemption.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

One 30-day extension. Overstay fine IDR 1,000,000 per day, with possible prosecution and deportation.

  • Travelling with children

Each traveller including children needs their own e-VOA and arrival card. Love Bali FAQ does not say children are exempt from the levy.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
