Trip checklist: Morocco

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans need to apply for a visa before travel to Morocco.

Permitted stay

Embassy visa: the length is set on the visa. Not published officially; one unofficial guide says up to 90 days for tourism. e-Visa: one entry, stay of up to 30 days, use within 180 days of issue.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

Tourism, family visits and business on a short-stay visa. The official e-Visa portal asks for the purpose of travel and whether you are attending an event when it checks eligibility, so options depend on purpose. Work or study needs a different visa.

  • Passport validity

At least 6 months validity on arrival (embassy document list and US State Department), with at least one blank page for the entry stamp. The UK FCDO states 3 months for British travellers, but plan on 6 months.

  • How to apply

Route 1, embassy visa: apply in person at the Embassy of Morocco in Pretoria with a completed form, two colour photos (3.5 x 4.5 cm), a passport valid 6 months, 3 months of bank statements, a flight itinerary, a hotel booking, an employment or school letter and travel insurance. Processing at least 10 working days. Fee: not published officially; one unofficial guide gives R375 (MAD 220) cash; the GSA says contact the embassy. Route 2, e-Visa (only if you hold a qualifying visa or residence permit, see status): apply online at the official portal www.acces-maroc.ma. Upload documents as JPG or PDF (max 1 MB). Processing about 3 working days standard or 1 working day express (GSA). The e-Visa fee could not be confirmed from an official page.

  • Where South Africans apply

Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco, 799 Francis Baard Street, Arcadia, Pretoria 0083. Visa submissions Monday to Thursday 09:00 to 11:00, collections 13:30 to 15:30 (13:00 to 14:00 in Ramadan). Tel +27 (0)12 343 0230. No VFS or BLS centre found for Morocco in South Africa. e-Visa applicants apply online at www.acces-maroc.ma.

  • Travel insurance

Travel insurance is on the embassy visa document list. No official minimum cover is published.

  • Return or onward ticket

A flight itinerary or return booking is required with the visa application.

  • Proof of funds

Bank statements for the last 3 months with the visa application. No minimum amount published. If you bring 100,000 dirhams or more in foreign currency (about USD 10,000), you must declare it on arrival. Taking Moroccan dirhams out of the country is not allowed.

  • Accommodation or invitation

A hotel reservation or voucher is required with the visa application.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

Morocco does not require yellow fever or other vaccinations from South African travellers. A polio certificate may be required if you come from a polio-affected country. Morocco is not a yellow fever risk country, so no yellow fever certificate is needed to return to South Africa, unless you transited more than 12 hours through the airport of a yellow fever risk country on the way.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

To extend, apply at a police station or the immigration office before your stay ends. Overstayers may have to see a judge before they can leave and can face fines, a deportation order or a re-entry ban. A written exit permit from the police may be needed.

  • Travelling with children

Under-18s travelling alone need consent from both parents and a copy of the birth certificate. A parent travelling alone with a child should carry a consent letter from the other parent. Children with a Moroccan father are Moroccan citizens under Moroccan law and may need the father's permission to leave.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
