Trip checklist: Myanmar
For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.
Visa requirement
South Africans need to apply online for an e-visa before travel to Myanmar.
Permitted stay
You can stay up to 28 days per visit.
Before you go
- Purpose of visit
Tourism and business only for the e-visa. Business e-visas need sponsorship from a registered Myanmar company, with its registration documents (UK FCDO).
- Passport validity
At least 6 months beyond arrival (UK FCDO, rule for all visitors).
- How to apply
Apply online at evisa.moip.gov.mm before travel. Fees: USD 50 tourist, USD 70 business, non-refundable (GSA and Wikipedia agree). Processing at least 3 working days. E-visa holders must enter through Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw or Mandalay international airports, or the Kawthaung land crossing from Thailand. Cruise passengers arrange visas through tour agents. Visas on arrival are not available (UK FCDO). GSA lists: passport valid 6 months, colour photo 4.6 cm x 3.8 cm, hotel booking, return ticket and travel health insurance.
- Where South Africans apply
Online at evisa.moip.gov.mm. For a visa in advance: Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, 329 Julius Jeppe Street, Waterkloof, Pretoria. Tel 012 341 2556. Visa submissions Monday to Friday 09:00 to 12:00 (GSA).
- Travel insurance
GSA lists travel and health insurance (it still mentions COVID-19 cover) as a document. Minimum cover not stated. The UK FCDO warns travel insurance may be invalid if you travel against its advice.
- Return or onward ticket
Proof of return ticket (GSA).
- Proof of funds
Not published. Declare foreign currency worth more than USD 10,000 on arrival, or risk imprisonment (UK FCDO). Myanmar is largely cash-based; many ATMs reject foreign cards and US dollar notes must be in perfect condition.
- Accommodation or invitation
Hotel booking proof (GSA). Business e-visa needs a registered Myanmar sponsor company (UK FCDO).
- Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa
Myanmar requires a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from a yellow fever transmission risk country (UK FCDO). Myanmar is not a yellow fever risk country, so South Africa does not require a yellow fever certificate when you return directly.
- Arrival forms
Not published. The UK FCDO updated its advice in August 2026 with details on mobile device registration; check before travel.
- Extending your stay and overstaying
Overstaying carries fines and possible detention (UK FCDO).
- Confirm with the embassy
Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
