Visa requirement

South Africans can get a visa on arrival in Nepal.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 90 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

    Tourism. Other purposes need visas from a Nepalese mission.

  • Passport validity

    At least 6 months beyond arrival, one blank page.

  • How to apply

    On arrival (Tribhuvan International Airport and land entry points) or online up to 15 days before arrival at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np, then pay at the airport. Fees (US State Dept): USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, USD 125 for 90 days, in US dollars; at land borders bring clean USD notes (2003 or newer).

  • Where South Africans apply

    On arrival/online. Embassy of Nepal in Pretoria exists (not opened).

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

    Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a risk country; polio may be required from some countries. Nepal is not a yellow-fever-risk country.

  • Arrival forms

    Online visa/arrival form at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np (optional pre-arrival; within 15 days of arrival). Cash over USD 5,000 must be declared. Gold/silver limits apply.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

    Extensions online/at Department of Immigration up to 150 days per year. Overstaying is a serious offence: fines or imprisonment.

  • Confirm with the embassy

    Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
