Trip checklist: South Sudan
For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.
Visa requirement
South Africans need to apply online for an e-visa before travel to South Sudan.
Permitted stay
Depends on the e-Visa bought. Reported options are 30 days single entry, 90 days multiple entry and 180 days multiple entry. The official portal landing pages do not state the stay length.
Before you go
- Purpose of visit
Tourism, business and visits all need a visa issued before arrival. UN personnel also need pre-authorisation from the South Sudan government.
- Passport validity
At least 6 months after the date you arrive, with at least 2 blank pages.
- How to apply
Online at https://www.evisa.gov.ss (Ministry of Interior, Department of e-Visa and Immigration Service). Create an account, fill in the form, pay online, then download the e-Visa PDF, which the portal says is issued within 72 hours. Print it and show it to the visa officer at the port of entry. Reported fees: USD 100 for 30 days single entry, USD 200 for 90 days multiple entry, USD 350 for 180 days multiple entry. The official landing pages do not publish the fee table, so confirm the fee inside the portal before paying.
- Where South Africans apply
Online through evisa.gov.ss. The Embassy of South Sudan in Pretoria can also be contacted; the UK FCDO says applications can also go through a South Sudanese embassy. Embassy visa fees and documents in Pretoria were not confirmed.
- Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa
South Sudan requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter. South Sudan is also on South Africa's yellow fever risk list, so you need a valid yellow fever certificate to re-enter South Africa after visiting, or after an airport transit of more than 12 hours there. The vaccine takes effect 10 days after the jab and the certificate is valid for life.
- Arrival forms
Visitors staying more than 3 days must register with the Department of Immigration and Aliens Control at the Ministry of Interior in Juba.
- Confirm with the embassy
