Trip checklist: Tajikistan
For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.
Visa requirement
South Africans need to apply online for an e-visa before travel to Tajikistan.
Permitted stay
You can stay up to 45 days per visit.
Before you go
- Purpose of visit
Tourism on the e-visa. Other visa categories (business, private, work, study) are issued under the simplified procedure via Tajik missions.
- Passport validity
Passport must be valid at least six months longer than the visa. UK FCDO also asks for two blank pages.
- How to apply
Apply online at www.evisa.tj (Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The e-visa is emailed to you; print it. Fee reported as USD 30, plus USD 20 if you add the GBAO (Pamir) permit; one tour operator reports USD 52. The official fee was not confirmed. Processing is usually several days but can be slow; apply weeks ahead.
- Where South Africans apply
Online at www.evisa.tj. No Tajik embassy in South Africa was found.
- Accommodation or invitation
No invitation needed for the e-visa. The form asks for an address in Tajikistan (a hotel booking is fine). Foreigners on a standard visa or visa-free must register with the Ministry of Interior within 10 working days of arrival. UK FCDO says hotels no longer register you, and that e-visa holders staying under the limit are exempt; check on arrival.
- Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa
No yellow fever rule published for South Africans. Tajikistan is not a yellow fever risk country, so South Africa does not require a yellow fever certificate when you return directly.
- Extending your stay and overstaying
UK FCDO says tourist visas cannot be extended. Failing to register can lead to fines or detention.
- Travelling with children
Not published for e-visas. Tajikistan raised the visa fee for children under 16 from USD 10 to USD 30 for consular visas.
- Confirm with the embassy
Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
