Trip checklist: Tonga

For South African passport holders. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Visa requirement

South Africans need to apply for a visa before travel to Tonga.

Permitted stay

You can stay up to 30 days per visit, and you can apply to extend.

Before you go

  • Purpose of visit

Visitor visas do not allow employment, business or study.

  • Passport validity

    At least 6 months.

  • How to apply

Apply before travel through a Tongan embassy or consulate with your passport, application form and supporting documents. Tonga Immigration also takes visa enquiries at tongapermit@gmail.com (the address published on the official revenue.gov.to page). Fee and processing time not published.

  • Where South Africans apply

No Tongan mission in South Africa. The GSA (SA visa agency) says South Africans apply by email through the Tonga High Commission in Canberra, Australia: 7 Newdegate Street, Deakin ACT 2600, phone +61 2 6232 4806, info@tongahighcom.com.au.

  • Return or onward ticket

A valid return ticket out of Tonga is required.

  • Proof of funds

Proof of sufficient funds for your stay. No amount published.

  • Accommodation or invitation

Confirmed accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter) may be asked for, according to the UK FCDO.

  • Vaccinations, including yellow fever on return to South Africa

The US State Department says Tonga does not require yellow fever vaccination. South Africa's rule: you need a yellow fever certificate to enter South Africa only if you arrive from or transited a yellow-fever-risk country. Tonga is not a risk country, so a direct return needs none, but a routing through a risk country in Africa or South America would trigger it.

  • Arrival forms

Cash over 10,000 pa'anga and valuables over 500 pa'anga must be declared on customs forms.

  • Extending your stay and overstaying

Extensions are handled at Immigration offices in Nuku'alofa or Neiafu. Overstay penalties not published.

  • Transit

Tonga transit rules not found. Hub rules: via Australia, South Africans may use Transit Without Visa (air arrival, onward flight to a third country within 8 hours, stay airside); otherwise an Australian Transit (771) or Visitor visa is needed. Via Auckland, South Africans need a New Zealand Transit Visa (from NZD 235, up to 24 hours airside) unless they already hold a NZ visa.

  • Confirm with the embassy

Rules change. Check the official source before you book.
